Scott Gilmore Biography

Building Markets was founded by Scott Gilmore, who serves as its CEO. Scott worked on Canada's integrated defense, development, and diplomatic support to Afghanistan in his previous capacity as a Canadian diplomat, as the Deputy Director for South Asia. The establishment of the defense department and formulating the national economic security policy were Scott's responsibilities as the deputy national security advisor for the United Nations peacekeeping operation in East Timor (UNTAET) in 2001. He was sent to the Canadian Embassy in Indonesia in 1998, where he reported on the fall of the Suharto regime and the start of local unrest. Scott received an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics after completing his studies in international commerce at the University of Alberta. He is a member of the Advisory Boards for the Samara Project and Canada 2020. Scott received one of the 2010 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship and was named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40 in 2009. With his wife Catherine McKenna, who founded Canadian Lawyers Abroad, and their three children, he resides in Ottawa.
