Quincy American hip hop music artist Matthew Hanley, better known by his stage name Schoolboy Q (sometimes abbreviated ScHoolboy Q), is from South Central Los Angeles, California. Hanley signed with Carson-based independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2009, then in late 2011, he confirmed a deal with large label Interscope Records.
Hanley is also a hip-hop ensemble Black Hippy member alongside fellow Californian rappers Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar. Hanley released ScHoolboy Turned Hustla, a mixtape, in 2008 as his debut full-length work. He then released Gangsta and Soul as a follow-up in 2009. He then returned in January 2011 with Setbacks, his debut solo album.
