Sarah Trahern Biography

Trahern began a new chapter in her successful career in the music industry and television when she was appointed CEO of the CMA in January 2014. She has more than 27 years of experience in the television industry, including 18 years of creating or managing Country Music programs. She works with the CMA Board of Directors to advance the organization's purpose and strategic goals while keeping in mind the organization's unique history and culture. Trahern is also the president of the CMA Foundation Board, which provides funding for music education initiatives for deserving kids nationwide. She started her cable career at C-SPAN in Washington, D.C., covering politics and current events and creating the well-liked program "Booknotes." To manage specials and entertainment programming for The Nashville Network, Trahern relocated to Nashville in 1995. (TNN). She began working for Great American Country (GAC) in 2005 when Scripps acquired the network. She was later elevated to Senior Vice President of Programming and then General Manager, overseeing GAC's programming, marketing, creative, and digital initiatives, among many other responsibilities. Trahern was recognized in 2015 with two awards: the Nashville Business Journal's 2015 Women in Music City Awards and Billboard Magazine's Top 50 Nashville Power Players (No. 20). Also, Billboard listed her as one of the 30 female "Power Players" in the music industry. Trahern was the focus of the Louise Scruggs Memorial Forum at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2011 and its honoree. In addition to chairing the Events Committee for the 2016 All-Star Hockey Game in Nashville, Sarah Trahern serves on board directors for the Baker Scholars program at Georgetown University and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University. She graduated from Leadership Nashville (1999) and Leadership Music (1999). She attended the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference as a member of the Department of Defense's 84th class and is a Betsy Magness Leadership Institute alumna from Women in Cable Television. Trahern holds a Georgetown University degree and an MBA from Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management. She and her husband, Wayne Flatt, are Nashville residents, and she is originally from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
