Every album has allowed her to evolve as a musician and artist, continuously reevaluating who she is and becoming a prominent voice in the emerging grown-up elective pop genre. McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she also studied traditional piano and guitar as a child in addition to voice training.
After some preparation at the Nova Scotia School of Design, Nettwerk Records approached her for a performance deal when she was the frontwoman of another wave band called October Game. She first declined because she wanted to focus on her studies, but in late 1987, she decided to accept and moved to Vancouver.
