Sara received a degree in fine arts from the Juilliard School. She made her Broadway playing debut in Paul Simon's The Capeman before moving on to roles in movies and television. She became more well-known for her part in the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Callie Torres.
As the series went on, the character's popularity grew, and Ramirez received many ALMA Award nominations for Best Actress and a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite Dramatic TV Actress. She made her voice acting debut in the 1999 computer game UmJammer Lammy. She also provided the voice of Queen Miranda for the anime series Sofia the First.
