Sarah Canning competed as a figure skater throughout her infancy and early adolescence. While attending F.R. Haythorne Junior High, she developed a passion for theatre. Canning performed in plays at Festival Place in her hometown and was a leading lady in numerous theatrical performances while a student at Bev Facey Community High School.
At 18, Canning made her stage debut in George Orwell's 1984 at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. At the University of Alberta, she studied public arts and considered journalism. However, Canning, who was 19 years old when she left college and came to Vancouver to pursue an acting career, still had a passion for performing.
