Santiago Calatrava studied civil engineering after receiving a degree in architecture because he was fascinated by the mathematical principles behind old architecture. Midway through the 1980s, Calatrava began to engage in significant public construction projects and established offices for his business in Zurich, Paris, and Valencia.

He employs steel concrete and innovative computer modeling techniques to create compositions that look both natural and technically impossible.
