About Sangeeta Bhatia
Sangeeta Bhatia Biography
For thinking beyond the box when it comes to cancer therapies. Sangeeta Bhatia, a medical researcher, believes art and science have more in common than you would imagine. She believes you have to experiment, play, and tinker to discover what merges and coalesces. To accomplish so, Bhatia seeks to foster a sense of serendipity in her lab by hiring scientists and engineers with a wide range of backgrounds and interests and instructing them to devote 20% of their time to underwater projects, which they must only inform her about if they make substantial progress. As a result, her group has made advances like nano-sized gold-rod injections that make tumors more receptive to therapy. Here's how she went about tackling another cancer-fighting project: THE PROBLEM: Cancer kills 70% of people in underdeveloped countries, yet existing detection equipment is too costly. In a rural clinic, you don't want to send a patient home and request a lab test, according to Bhatia. You're looking for a low-cost test that can be completed in under an hour. THE STORY: Bhatia's team was developing tumor-hunting magnetic nanoparticles that might be put into patients to boost MRI imaging capabilities. One of her students noted that the bladders of malignant animals shone brilliantly on the MRI during examinations. "What is this?" we wondered, she says. We discovered that the tumors were altering the nanoparticles, resulting in pieces being excreted in the urine. We'd have a fully noninvasive approach to monitor the tumor if we could measure anything in the pee. That was the "aha" moment for me. We then went back and did it on purpose. THE IMPLEMENTATION: The team created a cancer screening technology that operated similarly to a pregnancy test. We modified the nanoparticle a little bit so it would be simple to collect once we realized we wanted to detect it on paper [test strips], she explains. THE RESULTS: Bhatia's team recently secured money from MIT's commercialization center for a business that might someday bring the effective, cost-efficient tests into the hands of field medics. She's now working on a new version that may identify additional severe diseases such as blood clots and liver fibrosis.
