He broke Bill Shoemaker's record in the 1973 season by being the first Jockey to win 500 races in a calendar year. Sandy Hawley, one of the best jockeys of his time, has earned over $88.6 million in his career. He broke the single-year money-winning record for thoroughbred racing in 1976, making the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in the United States. Ice hockey became Hawley's favorite sport. While riding in California, he was hired as a penalty timekeeper for the Los Angeles Kings hockey club, giving him a front-row seat to his favorite matches.
