Sandra Postel is the director of the Global Water Policy Project, an independent think tank that speaks, publishes, and advises on global water concerns. She was named a Freshwater Fellow of the National Geographic Society in 2010, and she now serves as the Society's main water specialist. Sandra is a co-founder of Change the Course, a nationwide movement for freshwater protection and restoration. Sandra was a visiting senior lecturer in Environmental Studies at Mount Holyoke College from 2000 to 2008 and led the college's Center for the Environment late in her tenure. She was vice president for research at the Worldwatch Institute from 1988 to 1994. Sandra is a Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment, and she was designated one of the Scientific American 50 in 2002, an honor is given to those who have made significant contributions to science and technology. Sandra has been praised for her inspirational, inventive, and practical approach to advocating the preservation and sustainable use of freshwater. She is a major authority and prolific author on international water issues. She is the author of Pillar of Sand: Can the Irrigation Miracle Last? and Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity, which was named an Outstanding Academic Book by Choice magazine in 1993. Last Oasis was adapted into a 1997 PBS documentary and is available in eight languages. Sandra's piece Troubled Waters was chosen for inclusion in the Best American Science and Nature Writing collection in 2001. Rivers for Life: Managing Water for People and Nature is her co-authored book with Brian Richter (Island Press 2003). Sandra is the co-founder and host of Water Currents, National Geographic's freshwater blog. Sandra has written over 100 articles for magazines such as Science, Natural History, Scientific American, Foreign Policy, Ecological Applications, Technology Review, Environmental Science and Technology, International Wildlife, and Water Alternatives. She has authored more than 20 op-ed pieces for publications in the United States and overseas, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. She has also been on CBS Sunday Morning, ABC Nightline, and NPR's Science Friday. She has also served as a CNN Futurewatch analyst, addressed the European Parliament on environmental problems, and appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, ABC Nightline, and NPR's Science Friday. She also appears in Leonardo DiCaprios The 11th Hour and the BBC's Planet Earth. Sandra is a Post Carbon Institute Water Fellow who has also worked as an advisor to the National Research Council's Division on Earth and Life Studies along with American Rivers. She has served on the International Water Resources Association's Board of Directors as well as the editorial boards of Ecosystems, Water Policy, and Green Futures. She earned a B.A. (summa cum laude) in geology and political science from Wittenberg University and a M.E.M. from Duke University with a focus on resource economics and policy. Sandra has received two honorary Doctor of Science degrees, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from Duke University's School of Environments.
