Sandra Marquez Stathis was born in California to parents born in Colombia. She finds narratives about characters who move between two worlds to be compelling. Following losing her longtime partner at sea, she had a sit-down interview with Olivia Newton-John at her Malibu home as part of her profession.
She had previously worked in Haiti as a journalist for Reuters and as a human rights monitor for a joint OAS-UN mission. After the devastating 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010, Stathis returned to Haiti, where he had lived and worked for four years in the 1990s.
