The Institute uses genetic endocrine, detecting dogs, and other non-invasive wildlife monitoring approaches developed by Dr. Samuel Wasser. The Board of Regents of the University of Washington conferred upon Dr. Wasser the Endowed Chair in Conservation Biology in 2001. He oversaw the Wildlife Conservation and Management Training Program for African Nationals run by the Smithsonian Institution.
He also co-edited a book outlining one of the world's biodiverse hotspots, Biogeography and Ecology of the Rain Forests of Eastern Africa.
