In 1956, Dr. Gruber enrolled in college. He attended Emory University and later graduated from the University of Miami with a B.S. in zoology (FL). His M.S. and Ph.D. in Marine Science from the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Science, once again at the University of Miami, came shortly after.
He held several roles at the University of Miami before finishing a postdoctoral stint as a behavioral researcher at the Max-Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology Seewiesen, Germany. Dr. Gruber is regarded as an expert in shark behavior, both in terms of laboratory research and visually directed behavior and physiology.
