The earliest non-Nepalese woman to conquer Mount Everest was Samantha Larson. She also set a record for the youngest climber of the Seven Summits (also known as the Bass list), which are the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, by reaching the summit of Everest. According to the Nepali authorities, she was the youngest foreigner ever to reach the peak of Everest. However, other climbing Web sites assert that a 17-year-old French lad accomplished it in 1990. Larson attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where she participated in dance and music, and graduated in June 2006. She played the oboe for seven years and was a part of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and the All-Southern Honor Band. The Long Beach Poly dance squad included her as a member. To prepare for the Everest climb, Larson postponed her first year at Stanford University for a year. In 2007, she was a candidate for an ESPY Award.
