Before switching to big studio movies, Sam Worthington mostly played prominent parts in various low-budget films ranging from science fiction and action to romantic drama and comedy-drama. Worthington played the lead in a contemporary Australian adaptation of Macbeth and had a significant part in the 2004 film Somersault (2006).
For his performance in Somersault, he received the AFI Award for Best Lead Actor. He was well-known in Australia for playing Howard, the female lead's primary love interest, in the critically acclaimed Australian TV series Love My Way. Worthington's international film career started with several tiny parts in the Australian shot The Great Raid (2005), a Hollywood movie.
