Sam left Duncan Senior High School in 1969 to become a professional golfer. He enrolled at the University of Oklahoma but quickly gave up his desire to play golf there. Sam and Ann Elizabeth Mount went on their first date after Sam proposed to her. Ann and Sam got hitched on May 26th, 1972.
Together with two grandchildren, Joseph and John, they have two daughters, Melanie (born December 23, 1978) and Joanna (born October 3, 1984). Sam served as the Dallas Independent Presbyterian Church's temporary pastor when he was in Dallas (1974-1977). He joined the pastoral staff of Believers Chapel, a non-denominational biblical church, in Dallas after graduating in 1977.
