Sam Mihara is a Japanese American of the second generation. His parents were both born in Japan and came to the United States in the 1920s. Sam grew up in San Francisco, where he was born in the early 1930s.

When World War II broke out, Sam and his family were compelled to relocate, first to a detention camp in Pomona, California, and then to a distant prison camp in Northern Wyoming, where they lived for three years. The camp was one of ten across the country.
