The Afghan Institute of Learning, Professor Sakena Yacoobi Private Hospital in Herat, and Professor Sakena Yacoobi Private High Schools in Kabul and Herat are all founded by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi. Dr. Yacoobi created the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), an Afghan women-run NGO in 1995. She serves as its executive director.
AIL was the first group to train Afghan women in leadership and human rights. Once the Taliban closed girls' schools in Afghanistan in the 1990s, AIL financed 80 clandestine home schools for 3000 girls. For Afghan women, Women's Learning Centers were established initially by AIL.
