Saira Blair was just one election away from being the West Virginia House's youngest member. The 17-year-old defeated Republican Larry Kump in the Eastern Panhandle primary by 150 votes. The primary voting saw a low turnout for the midterms. Ballots for the West Virginia 59th House District seat were under 1600.
Every resident of West Virginia who will turn 18 before an election is eligible to compete for a House seat. Blair will be the youngest person ever elected to the West Virginia House if she wins in November. Currently, Larry Swan holds the record. At the age of 20, he won the election in 1972.
