Sahle-Work Zewde began her lengthy career in diplomacy as ambassador to Senegal when she joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988. She also has accreditations to Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and the Gambia.
She worked for IGAD, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development, and Djibouti for ten years before becoming Ethiopia's ambassador to France—Morocco's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, together with Tunisia. In 2009, President Sahle-Work Zewde became a member of the UN and held the position of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG).
