In 1996, the Saratoga Springs, New York native began working as a crew chief for Larry Pearson's NASCAR Busch Series squad. The next year, he moved up to the Cup series, where he was in charge of Derrike Cope's MB2-owned vehicle.
Ervin Irvan took over as MB2 driver in 1998, and he and Pemberton teamed for three poles and 11 top-ten finishes. Pemberton and the MB2 team both set career highs in the final owner's point standings, finishing 15th.
