Ryan Merkley Biography

The board of directors of Creative Commons is thrilled to welcome Ryan Merkley as our new CEO, following a thorough search. He'll begin working on June 1st, and we're all excited to work with him.  Ryan comes to us from a career in charities, technology, and government where he worked to advance social issues and public policy. Ryan launched Mozilla's successful individual fundraising campaign while serving as a chief operating officer at the Mozilla Foundation, where he contributed to the creation of Mozilla products and projects promoting the open web, such as Lightbeam, Webmaker, and Popcorn. Ryan most recently worked at Vision Critical, a Vancouver-based SaaS and market research organization, as managing director and senior vice president of public relations. Prior to that, he served in key positions in Toronto City Hall, notably as a senior advisor to Mayor David Miller, where he spearheaded the city's open data initiative. Ryan also worked with the City of Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics as the director of corporate communications. He has a strong track record of leading civic-minded and technology-focused organizations, and I believe he'll be an excellent leader in the Creative Commons movement.
