Rusty Smith is an American short-track speed skater who won bronze in the 500m at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and again in the 5000m relay at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Shani Davis flew to Utah in December 2001 to compete for a berth on the 2002 Winter Olympics short track squad.
Due to points won in earlier races, teammates Smith and Apolo Ohno already secured spots on the six-man squad, while Ron Biondo was a guarantee for third. Davis would have to win the last race to qualify for the next round. Davis would have to beat both Ohno and Smith because they were both competing.
