Keith Rupert Murdoch is an American media magnate who was born in Australia. Sir Keith Murdoch, his father, had worked for the Herald and Weekly Times newspaper publishing firm, covering all Australian states save New South Wales, as a reporter, editor, and senior executive. Murdoch refused to join his late father's registered public business after his father's death in 1952, instead of forming his own private firm, News Limited. After the conglomerate split on June 28, 2013, Murdoch held complete control as Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, now the world's second-largest media conglomerate, and its successors, News Corp and 21st Century Fox. Murdoch bought a number of newspapers in Australia and New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s before moving into the United Kingdom in 1969, acquiring the News of the World and The Sun. He stands 1.54m tall, despite reports that he has shrunk with age. Murdoch relocated to New York City in 1974 to grow his business in the United States, although he kept his holdings in Australia and the United Kingdom. Murdoch purchased The Times, his first British broadsheet, in 1981 and became a naturalized American citizen (and therefore lost his Australian citizenship) in 1985 to meet the legal criteria for owning U.S. television. Murdoch concentrated his UK printing operations in Wapping in 1986, eager to implement newer electronic publishing technology, resulting in severe labor battles. Twentieth Century Fox (1985), HarperCollins (1989), and The Wall Street Journal were all bought by Murdoch's News Corporation (2007). Murdoch founded BSkyB, a British broadcaster, in 1990 and expanded into Asian networks and South American television during the 1990s. Murdoch's News Corporation, which had a net worth of over $5 billion in 2000, owned over 800 firms in more than 50 countries. Murdoch faced claims in July 2011 that his firms, notably News Corporation's News of the World, had been frequently hacking the phones of celebrities, aristocracy, and public figures. Murdoch is the subject of British police and government investigations into bribery and corruption, as well as FBI investigations in the United States. Murdoch resigned as a director of News International on July 21, 2012. Murdoch stepped down as CEO of 21st Century Fox on July 1, 2015. Through the Murdoch Family Trust, Murdoch and his family own both 21st Century Fox and News Corporation. Murdoch was designated acting CEO of Fox News in July 2016, following Roger Ailes' departure due to sexual harassment allegations.
