Wegerle, while being born in South Africa, moved to the United States to play collegiate soccer for the University of South Florida. In 1984, he was voted Rookie of the Year after playing for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the NASL's last season.
Wegerle came to England when the league disbanded and played for Chelsea, Luton Town, Queens Park Rangers, Coventry City, and Blackburn Rovers.
