She was the national champion of the United States in 1982, 1983, and 1984, as well as the world champion in 1983 and a silver medalist at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Sumners was born in Palo Alto, California, but she grew up in Edmonds, Washington, where she began to skate and where she spent most of her skating career.
After her Olympic success in 1984, Edmonds' 5th Avenue was renamed Rosalynn Sumners Boulevard.
