Rosalind W. Picard is an engineer, scientist, inventor, and professor at the MIT Media Lab, where she is the Grover M. Hermann Professor of Health Sciences and Technology. A prolific inventor with over 100 patents, she has authored/co-authored more than 400 scientific papers and holds degrees in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech (BS) and MIT (MS, ScD). She founded and directs the Affective Computing Research Group, pioneering the field of affective computing. Her groundbreaking 1997 book “Affective Computing” laid the foundation for giving machines emotional intelligence. Picard’s work integrates wearable sensors, physiological monitoring, AI, and machine learning to measure stress, emotion, and health states. Her inventions have applications in autism, epilepsy, depression, PTSD, and human-computer interaction. She co-founded Affectiva and Empatica, which developed the first FDA-cleared AI smartwatch for seizure detection and monitoring. Picard is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Inventors, an IEEE and ACM Fellow, and recipient of major awards including the 2022 Lombardy Prize for Computer Science Research.
