Robert knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age. Born in Maplewood, N.J., to immigrant parents — who tried ... with little success ... to steer their son in the direction of a "practical" career like medicine or teaching — Robert started designing jewelry as a teen-ager. With his baubles in tow, Robert would ditch class to catch the train to Manhattan, where he'd hawk his wares to stores downtown, such as Canal Jeans. Not bad for a kid from Jersey.A few years of hard work and a degree from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology later, Robert turned his hobby into a lucrative career, landing his jewelry in some of the most prestigious retailers in the world, including Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's New York. Robert went on to secure a spot as the style consultant for Gay Entertainment Television, interviewing such high-profile guests as designers Cynthia Rowley and Tommy Hilfger, Ivana Trump, David Bowie and Rosie O'Donnell. In fact, Robert's keen sense of style so impressed guest Cynthia Rowley that she asked him to produce her Fall '97 fashion show.
