Robert Pinsky is a distinguished American poet, essayist, literary critic, translator, and former U.S. Poet Laureate. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, he earned a BA from Rutgers University and an MA/PhD in philosophy from Stanford. He served an unprecedented three terms as U.S. Poet Laureate (1997–2000), during which he founded the Favorite Poem Project to document Americans’ personal connections to poetry and bring the art form to a wider public. Pinsky’s collections include “The Figured Wheel”, “Jersey Rain”, “Gulf Music”, and the recent “Proverbs of Limbo” (2024). He is also celebrated for his acclaimed translation of Dante’s Inferno. A professor emeritus at Boston University, he has received numerous honors, including the Lenore Marshall Prize and William Carlos Williams Award. Known as a “poet-critic,” Pinsky bridges intellectual rigor with explorations of memory, culture, and American identity.
