Robert Lighthizer served as a trade lawyer and U.S. Trade Representative from 2017 to 2021 while leading the Trump administration's transformation of American trade policies. As the main designer of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) he replaced NAFTA while conducting significant trade negotiations with China and the EU and Japan.
During his early career Lighthizer worked as Deputy USTR under President Reagan to negotiate two dozen trade agreements and later became Chief of Staff for the Senate Finance Committee. He dedicated more than three decades to private practice at Skadden where he defended U.S. industries through trade enforcement and policy work.
