Robert Gilliard Biography

Gillard graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He actively participated in various university activities, such as serving as a resident assistant and an assistant to the organic chemistry teaching laboratories. He was also a part of the Executive Board of Student Advisors, the student representative to the College of Engineering & Science, and the secretary and treasurer of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates Chapter. His research training began in the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University under the guidance of Prof. Rhett C. Smith, and his work has been featured in COES IDEAS Magazine and Clemson Profiles. He later earned his doctorate in chemistry from The University of Georgia, specializing in organometallic chemistry. While in Prof. Greg Robinson’s laboratory, he focused on stabilizing highly reactive organoberyllium complexes. Using carbenes, he synthesized the first example of a crystallographically characterized compound containing the reactive beryllium borohydride [Be(BH4)2] unit. This achievement has been highlighted in recent articles and books. In addition, Gillard has received numerous honors, including being selected as one of the few young American scientists to represent the United States at the 63rd Nobel Laureate Meeting in Landau, Germany. He is now a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at ETH Zürich and Case Western Reserve University.
