Forster was born in Rochester, New York, to Grace Dorothy and Robert Wallace Foster, an elephant trainer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and subsequently a baking supply business executive; the couple separated in 1949.
He made his cinematic debut in the critically praised Medium Cool in 1969, but after that, he generally had minor roles in action and horror pictures, notably Disney's The Black Hole, which seemed to push his career into oblivion.
