Rob McElhenney and struggling actors Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton developed their own TV show concept titled "It's Always Sunny on TV." The show chronicled the foibles of down-and-out, not necessarily likable actors struggling to find work in LA.
First, they shot a pilot with a camcorder using their apartments as sets, but TV networks either passed on the idea or wanted to water down its creativity. Finally, however, FX greenlit seven initial episodes and shifted the premise to McElhenney's native Philadelphia, where they shot exteriors.
