Lowe was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Charles and Barbara Hepler, and reared in Dayton, Ohio, and Los Angeles. He rose to fame after starring in a number of hit films with other members of the Brat Pack, the most renowned of which being St. Elmo's Fire.
Lowe and his brother, actor Chad Lowe, grew up on the Westside of Los Angeles and attended Santa Monica High School, where Emilio Estevez, another Brat-Packer, was one of their classmates. Hilary Swank, a two-time Academy Award winner, is Lowe's sister-in-law and is married to Chad, however, the couple announced their desire to split in May 2006.
