Rob Chesnut Biography

After serving as the company's general counsel for over four years, Rob Chesnut was appointed as the Chief Ethics Officer of Airbnb, Inc. in late 2019. Rob holds degrees from both the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School. He spent 14 years working for the US Justice Department, prosecuting cases including espionage, murder, abduction, and bank robberies, including the trial of CIA agent Aldrich Ames. He joined eBay in 1999 as its third attorney, where he eventually formed the Trust and Safety team and oversaw the legal department for North America. After that, Rob worked for the leading provider of online education for six years as General Counsel and first attorney at Chegg, where he was instrumental in the 2013 IPO. In 2016, he joined Airbnb, where he increased the legal department's size from 30 to over 150 lawyers working out of 20 offices across the globe. His group spearheaded global attempts to support house-sharing and handle legal difficulties with local authorities and landlords. Rob created the well-liked interactive staff program Integrity Belongs Here to promote ethics across the company's culture. St Martin's Press will release his book "Intentional Integrity: How Smart Companies Can Lead an Ethical Revolution" in the spring of 2020.
