Ricky Morton began wrestling in 1978, under the tutelage of his father, Paul. He mostly competed for Mid-Southern Wrestling in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was frequently paired with Ken Lucas and Eddie Gilbert. In 1983, he joined Mid-Southern Wrestling and established The Rock 'N Roll Express with Robert Gibson, the combo that made him famous.
They won the Mid-South Tag Duo Titles three times and had feuds with the team that would become their arch enemies, Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey's The Midnight Express.
