Steiner is most remembered for his work in the National Wrestling Alliance, World Championship Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation as a singles wrestler and as part of the tag team The Steiner Brothers with his younger brother, Scott. Robert Rechsteiner was a strong amateur wrestler at the University of Michigan, finishing fourth in an NCAA Championship tournament. George The Animal Steele introduced him to professional wrestling while he was there, and he went into the industry right out of college. Before joining the National Wrestling Alliance in 1988, he worked for the American Wrestling Association, Montreal, Canada, and the Universal Wrestling Federation under the stage name Rick Steiner. Before his brother Scott became pro, he joined a tag team with Sting and won the NWA Television Title from Mike Rotunda. The Steiner Brothers, one of the most dominant tag teams of their day, was created by the two. In November 1989, the duo proved their worth by beating the Freebirds for the NWA Tag Team Championship. The duo continued to dominate in the NWA, winning many titles and making appearances at New Japan Pro Wrestling on occasion. In December 1992, the two moved to the World Wrestling Federation, WCW's main rival. They were very successful there, capturing the WWF Tag Team Championship in June 1993 from Money Incorporated.
