Steiner is most remembered for his work in the National Wrestling Alliance, World Championship Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation as a singles wrestler and as part of the tag team The Steiner Brothers with his younger brother, Scott. Robert Rechsteiner was a strong amateur wrestler at the University of Michigan, finishing fourth in an NCAA Championship tournament.
George The Animal Steele introduced him to professional wrestling while he was there, and he went into the industry right out of college. Before joining the National Wrestling Alliance in 1988, he worked for the American Wrestling Association, Montreal, Canada, and the Universal Wrestling Federation under the stage name Rick Steiner.
