In 1974, he graduated from Portsmouth Senior High School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; in 1978, he received a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the United States Air Force Academy, and in 1979, he received a master's degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology, thanks to a National Science Foundation Fellowship.
