Schroder made his film debut in the 1979 adaptation of The Champ. The next year, he collaborated with Elliott Gould on a Walt Disney feature picture called The Last Flight Of Noah's Ark. Despite Schroder's excellent performance, the picture failed to make money at the box office. He rose to prominence as the star of the television show Silver Spoons.
He tried to establish himself as a genuine actor as he grew older. He changed his name from Ricky to Rick and chose to focus on jobs that would allow him to grow as an actor.
