Despite never winning a Cup Series game, he remained a popular favorite throughout the series. Mast grew up around racing because both his father and uncle owned race teams. After trading an Angus cow for his first automobile, he began racing at Natural Bridge Speedway and Eastside Speedway at the age of 16.
Mast began racing in the Busch Series in 1982, after dominating at the hobby track level for a decade, and scored four top-ten results in eleven events in his #22. Mast's first full-time season was in 1985, and he finished in the top 10 fifteen times.
