Team Festina was devastated by a doping scandal in 1998 when health aide Willy Voet was caught with substantial amounts of prescription and illicit medications used for doping. Willy Voet said that he was well aware of what he was doing and even engaged in professional rider trafficking. Richard Virenque denied doping himself on purpose.
