Richard Verma is an American lawyer and former diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to India from 2014 to 2017. He was the first Indian-American to hold this position. Verma was born and raised in Pennsylvania, but his parents hailed from India. They had lived through the partition of India and its fight for independence.
He served as an Air Force judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force before working as a senior adviser to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. In 2007, Verma joined the U.S. State Department as Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs. After leaving the State Department, he worked as a senior counselor at the law firm Steptoe & Johnson.
