Richard Russo Biography

Richard Russo is an American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter known for his humorous yet poignant depictions of working-class life in small-town America. He won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel “Empire Falls”, which also became an Emmy-winning HBO miniseries. His notable works include “Mohawk” (1986), “Nobody’s Fool” (1993), “Straight Man” (1997), and “Bridge of Sighs” (2007), often exploring themes of economic decline and personal struggle. Russo earned a B.A., MFA, and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He has taught at institutions like Colby College and co-wrote the screenplay for “Nobody’s Fool” (1994), starring Paul Newman. His memoir, “Elsewhere” (2012), reflects on his upbringing. Russo received the National Book Critics Circle Award nomination and was honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
