Richard Preston is a writer and bestselling author from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is known for his books on infectious diseases, bioterrorism, redwoods, and other topics, as well as his fiction. Preston's extensive background research and interviews are the basis for his journalistic and fictional writing. He attended Pomona College in Claremont, California, and graduated from Wellesley High School in Massachusetts.

His breakout book, "The Hot Zone" (1994), is a "non-fiction thriller" about the Ebola virus. The book was the basis for the Hollywood movie Outbreak (1995). His other non-fiction works include "The Demon in the Freezer" (2002), "Panic in Level 4: Cannibals," "Killer Viruses," and "Other Journeys to the Edge of Science," and "The Wild Trees" (2007).
