Richard Horton Biography

Richard Horton is a medical doctor, editor, and author, best known as the editor-in-chief of the medical journal The Lancet. He was born in London in 1961 and grew up in the seaside town of Brighton, England. After studying medicine at the University of Birmingham, Horton worked as a house officer in neurology at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. He then spent a year as a research fellow at the Institute of Neurology in London before returning to Frenchay Hospital to complete his clinical training. In 1990, Horton joined The Lancet as an assistant editor. In 1995, he became the youngest editor-in-chief in the journal's history. During his tenure, he has overseen the publication of several groundbreaking studies, including research on the links between tobacco and lung cancer and the impact of climate change on public health. In addition to his work at The Lancet, Horton is a prolific author and has written several books on health and medicine, including "Second Opinion: Doctors, Diseases, and Decisions in Modern Medicine" and "The COVID-19 Catastrophe: What's Gone Wrong and How to Stop It Happening Again". Horton received numerous awards for his contributions to medicine and public health, including the Prince Mahidol Award for Global Health in 2016 and the Edinburgh Medal in 2017. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
