Richard Flanagan is a highly acclaimed Tasmanian novelist and filmmaker. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his work, including being longlisted for the 2014 Booker Prize. Flanagan was born in Longford, Tasmania, and is descended from Irish convicts. He grew up in the remote mining town of Rosebery on Tasmania's western coast.
Flanagan left school at 16 and later returned to study at the University of Tasmania. Flanagan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with first-class honors. He then earned a Rhodes Scholarship at Worcester College, Oxford, where he earned a Master of Letters in History. Flanagan started his career writing non-fiction before moving to fiction.
