Richard Culatta Biography

Richard E. Culatta is the CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), a former Chief Innovation Officer for the State of Rhode Island, and Director of the Office of Educational Technology for the U.S. Department of Education. Raised in Rhode Island, Culatta earned his bachelor's degree in Spanish teaching and a master's degree in instructional psychology and technology from Brigham Young University. He began his career as a high school teacher. He later became a technology advisor for the David O. McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University. He also worked as a senior advisor to the Secretary and Director of the Office of Educational Technology from 2013 to 2015. During his tenure, he authored the 2016 National Educational Technology Plan. He ran the #GoOpen campaign, encouraging schools to use open copyright licenses. As CEO of ISTE, Culatta's current focus is on using technology to close equity gaps and redefine digital citizenship.
