Richard Brodhead is an American scholar and academic administrator. He was born on April 17, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio. He earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1968 and his Ph.D. in English from Yale in 1972. Brodhead is best known for serving as the President of Duke University from 2004 to 2017.
During his tenure, he oversaw the development of Duke's financial aid program, the expansion of the university's global presence, and the establishment of new interdisciplinary research initiatives. Before his time at Duke, Brodhead was a professor of English at Yale and served as the Dean of Yale College from 1993 to 2004.
