Richard Ellef Ayoade, born in Hammersmith and raised in Suffolk, England, is the son of a Norwegian mother, Dagny Amalie (Baassuik), and a Nigerian father, Layide Ade Laditi Ayoade. He attended Cambridge University, where he studied Law and became the president of the Cambridge Footlights club, following in the footsteps of British comedy legends like Monty Python's Eric Idle, Hugh Laurie, and Graeme Garden. Ayoade's breakthrough in television came with his work on the cult classic Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004), a parody of 1980s science fiction shows that he directed, co-wrote, and starred in with Matthew Holness. Ayoade's performance as the passionate and self-assured publisher, pornographer, and nightclub owner 'Dean Learner' demonstrated his acting skills. After making cameos in another cult series, The Mighty Boosh (2003), Ayoade played the socially oblivious and dweebish savant Moss in the popular series The IT Crowd (2006). Despite being notably shy and self-effacing in interviews, Ayoade's position in the public consciousness was firmly established.
