Richard L. Armitage took over as president of Armitage International in March 2005. The Senate had already confirmed his appointment as Deputy Secretary of State on March 23, 2001. On March 26, 2001, he was sworn in. Armitage was president of Armitage Associates L.C. from May 1993 until March 2001, before returning to government duty in 2001.
He was involved in a variety of international commercial and public policy ventures, as well as regular public speaking and writing. Armitage (with the personal status of Ambassador) led US aid to the former Soviet Union's new independent nations (NIS) from March 1992 until his retirement in May 1993.
